Mar Galcerán Makes History as Spain Elects Its First Parliamentarian with Down's Syndrome

Spain Marks Historic Moment with the Election of First Parliamentarian with Down's Syndrome

In a groundbreaking move, Spain has elected Mar Galcerán as its first parliamentarian with Down's syndrome. The 45-year-old secured a seat in Valencia's regional assembly, making her the first person with Down's syndrome to join a European regional or national parliament.

Mar Galcerán has been actively involved in politics since the age of 18, aligning herself with Spain's conservative People's Party. In an interview with The Guardian, she emphasized her desire to be recognized as a person rather than defined by her disability. Galcerán stated, "Society is starting to see that people with Down's syndrome have a lot to contribute."

This historic appointment has garnered widespread support from fellow politicians and advocacy groups. Carlos Mazón, President of the Regional Government of Valencia, expressed on social media, "Great news for politics, overcoming barriers." Agustín Matía Amor from Down España, a Down's syndrome organization in Spain, described it as "a huge step forward and an example of real inclusion."

Down's syndrome is a genetic condition present from birth and not a disease or illness. It can impact learning abilities and physical health to varying degrees. The election of Mar Galcerán reflects a positive shift toward recognizing and embracing the contributions of individuals with Down's syndrome in society. In the UK alone, there are approximately 60,000 people living with Down's syndrome.
